Theoretical weight from nominal dimensions for carbon steel (7850 kg/m³), excluding corner/root radii and rolling tolerances; actual weight may differ slightly. Beams (IPE / HEA / HEB / UPN) are weighed from standard section tables.

Steel weight formulas

Weight = cross-section area × length × steel density (7850 kg/m³). In practice: kg per metre = section area in mm² × 0.00785.

ProductWeight (kg)Example
Sheet / platelength (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.856000 × 1500 × 6 mm = 423.9 kg
Round pipe0.02466 × (OD − t) × t × L114.3 × 4 mm = 10.88 kg/m
Square / rectangular tube2t × (A + B − 2t) × 0.00785 × L100 × 50 × 3 mm = 6.78 kg/m
Anglet × (A + B − t) × 0.00785 × L50 × 50 × 5 mm = 3.73 kg/m
Flat barW × t × 0.00785 × L40 × 5 mm = 1.57 kg/m
Round bard² × 0.006165 × LØ20 mm = 2.466 kg/m
Square bara² × 0.00785 × L20 × 20 mm = 3.14 kg/m

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the weight of a steel plate?

Multiply length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85. Example: a 6000 × 1500 × 6 mm plate weighs 6 × 1.5 × 6 × 7.85 ≈ 423.9 kg.

What does a 40 × 5 mm flat bar weigh per metre?

Section area 40 × 5 = 200 mm², so weight = 200 × 0.00785 = 1.57 kg per metre, or 9.42 kg for a 6 m bar.

How do I calculate round pipe weight?

Weight per metre = 0.02466 × (outside diameter − wall thickness) × wall thickness, in mm. Example: 114.3 × 4 mm pipe ≈ 10.88 kg per metre.

Is the calculated weight the delivered weight?

It is a theoretical weight from nominal dimensions. Actual weight can differ slightly because of rolling tolerances and corner radii on tubes and angles, so quotations use actual or table weights.
