How do you specify an IPE, HEA, HEB or UPN beam in a quotation request?

Short answer
Write the series and size together (e.g. IPE 200 or HEB 300), then the steel grade (e.g. S235JR or S355JR), length and quantity in pieces or tonnes. The series matters because the number alone does not define the section: an HEA 200 is actually 190 mm high while an HEB 200 is 200 mm.
Common series
| Series | Shape | Example | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| IPE | I-section, parallel flanges | IPE 200 | Number = nominal height in mm |
| HEA | Wide-flange H — light | HEA 200 | Actual height may be below the number |
| HEB | Wide-flange H — heavy | HEB 200 | Heavier than HEA of the same size |
| UPN | U-channel, tapered flanges | UPN 160 | Number = nominal height in mm |
Steel grade
Common European structural grades are S235, S275 and S355 to EN 10025-2. The older names St37 and St52 (from the withdrawn German DIN 17100) are still used in the market and correspond approximately to S235 and S355. Quote the grade required by your project's structural specification.
Ordering checklist
- Series and size for each line (IPE 200, HEB 300…)
- Steel grade and standard
- Required length or cut lengths
- Quantity in pieces or tonnes
- Whether mill certificates are required
- Delivery location and required date
This is general guidance. Section and grade selection is the responsibility of the project's structural engineer.
FAQ
Is “beam 20” enough?
No. State the series (IPE, HEA, HEB or UPN) — each has different dimensions and mass for the same number.
