Checkered steel plate: uses, thicknesses and how to order
Last reviewed:
Short answer
Checkered plate is steel plate with a raised anti-slip pattern on one face. It is used for stair treads, platforms, trench covers, vehicle floors and ramps. Thickness is measured excluding the pattern, most commonly 3 to 10 mm.
Uses
| Use | Typical thickness |
|---|---|
| Light covers and guards | 3 mm |
| Stair treads and walkways | 4 – 5 mm |
| Platforms and vehicle floors | 5 – 6 mm |
| Trench covers and ramps with vehicle traffic | 8 – 10 mm |
Guidance only: the right thickness depends on load and span between supports, which the designer determines.
What to put in your order
- Thickness excluding pattern, width and length (1 or 1.25 m widths are common)
- Steel grade, e.g. S235 or St37
- Black or galvanized, if it will be exposed or in damp conditions
- Quantity in sheets or tonnes, and delivery location
FAQ
Is checkered plate heavier than flat plate of the same thickness?
Yes, slightly, because of the raised pattern; the difference depends on the pattern.
